Any good resources for learning HOW to wireframe?

I'm reviewing HTML right now, and trying to create/polish a website for my boss. I want to be able to start from scratch, but I'm just not really understanding how wireframing works.

I've already looked up a little bit on the Internet but I'm still confused.

Basically, the question is: Could anyone provide any links/useful tips for wireframing?

Also, I'd prefer to just do pencil and paper rather than having to pay for any wireframing programs.

There is an Design course on Treehouse on how to create a wire frame using Illustrator. The steps themselves can be used without Illustrator too.
