How long roughly...

Hi,

I was just wondering roughly how long some people here have taken to complete or make real headway with these courses. At present I'm nearly finished the Building a Simple Website and just LOVE this site and the course which I started in November this year. It would be great to fins out from anyone really what your thoughts are on these courses and how long its taken you so far.

Cheers,

Martin

Hi Martin,

it's really impossible to say how long it will take you to get through any of the courses, because it depends on what your previous experience is like, how much time in one block you can spend on a project etc.

I still can't predict how long any of the courses will take me because I find that with some concepts I need to go back to a video multiple times, try it out on my own work and then maybe even come back again to really let it sink in. At other times I am already familiar with either the topic or at least related issues and pick it up immediately. And sometimes you just have to refresh stages because there was too much time in between to remember what the previous steps involved. And finally, some code challenges are just uhm @$ยง%ยก%&%!

Someone else has asked a similar question before and I thought the answer was quite good more on that here Maybe that gives you a bit of an idea too.

In general, trying to just add up the times of the videos will probably never work as suggested here because if you never have to pause, backtrack or repeat, I'd be surprise.

In any case, whenever I tried to estimate a completion time I got frustrated so maybe it is just better to plough ahead whenever you can and at you own speed celebrating one badge at a time (those at least come often enough to chase them).

Hope that helps.

This is all really good advice :+1:

A good rule of thumb is one hour per badge.

Some courses have longer badges (e.g. CSS Foundations) and with some courses, more people seem to have trouble on (like the Ruby on Rails ones) then again some badges don't have code challenges (e.g. the Business category).

Thanks very much to both of you, I had a suspicion that this wouldn't be a quick thing that other online course have offered and thought that maybe I might be doing something wrong, thankfully it appears that I'm not.

Once again, many thanks to you both. :)
