My guide lines won't work on Ai

How would I get them to work?

You can press Ctrl+R to show the rulers, once they are shown just drag a guideline from the upper ruler or left ruler.

If you already have guides created you can toggle them on and off by pressing ⌘ + ; or, if you're on windows, ctrl + ;
