Networking Thursday – Connect with other Treehouse Students!

Hey Treehouse Students!

We're back with another Networking Thursday – giving you the opportunity to connect with other Treehouse Students!

Many of you may have experienced the energy around the Treehouse Festival. The one-on-one networking sessions were a hit! It's always amazing to see y'all forming connections and cheering each other on.

💬 How to participate in Networking Thursday:

Networking Thursday

  1. Answer the icebreaker question: What age were you when you first started learning to code (or design)?
  2. Introduce yourself!
  3. Share your LinkedIn profile URL for other students to connect to
  4. Share links and/or screenshots of the projects you've been working on
  5. Share your interests, hobbies, etc!

Make those connections, support each other, leave some endorsements/recommendations on other student's LinkedIn profiles, lend a helping hand to folx in search of work in tech, and give some positive feedback on fellow student's projects. We're all on this learning journey together!

I'll get things started! 💬

I'm Ryan Mouser, the Content & Community Marketing Specialist here at Treehouse. I was 15 years old when I started learning to code in PHP for a popular text-based MMORPG game. I've been with Treehouse for over 2 years now and have had the amazing opportunity to wear many different hats. I've been learning with Treehouse since 2015 (you can check out my previous profile here).

Currently, I'm working alongside our world-class team on some exciting opportunities to bring the Treehouse Community closer together. Stay tuned! 😀

Outside of Treehouse, I have the joy of living life with my incredible wife, our 3 awesome kids, and our 2 cat furbabies. We love to make music, garden, cook, play games, and watch fun TV (any Avatar: The Last Airbender fans out there?)

You can connect with me on LinkedIn here. Looking forward to connecting with y'all!

Happy networking! :)

My name is Karl. I started getting into it pretty recently. I am 25. I love games and I would like to learn how to make them. I know the road to that is long but I want to get it done. I wish everyone luck in their endeavors and hopefully, we can all work together someday.

Yess Avatar!! Also love to see Legend of Korra was #2 on Netflix recently. I am pretty bummed that Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko pulled out of the netflix adaptation...

It's nice to meet you Ryan!

Great to meet you Karl Gonzales!

Nice to meet you as well, Courtney Pure! Looking forward to Legend of Korra – and hoping the Netflix adaptation will be good regardless!

Hey y'all! Join us for another Networking Thursday (8/27) session here!

Hello Everybody, I'm Andrew Hinkson. I am an Account Manager at a tow company but have wanted to change careers for some time now. I was about 16 when I first started coding but have started over and over again due to work being main priority for the last 15 years. This time I am going to make more of an effort in staying on task of upgrading my life/career.

I have kind of had tunnel vision for a while when it comes to projects so the only thing I would have to share are the projects from my Javascript Full Stack Tech Degree I have been working on here at Treehouse. Heres the link to my github if you wanted to take a look my github page.

I am currently also enjoying learning woodworking in my garage. It has been something that has always interested me, same with programming, but never really had the time. Due to the current situation I find myself with way more time than i have ever had so I figured why not. Also just finished Avatar: TLA Ryan and have to say I am not sure why I waited so long to watch it. Great Stuff!

I am also realizing I need to start using my linkedIn page, thats what the cool kids are doing now right? Here it is if you want to connect LinkedIn

Well I do hope everybody has a great day/week/year. Stay safe out there!

Hey Ryan - I definitely understand having to prioritize work and not being able to focus as much on programming as much as I would like to. Due to covid that all changed and has actually given me a load of time to really buckle down and focus on studies.

I also hear that comment a lot of what took me so long to finish ATLA hahah It's so good!

Great story Andrew. Very nice to meet you.

We're cheering you on, Andrew! Nice to meet you!

Great to read your story Andrew. I know what you mean about work. You certainly have great initiative, and always moving forward.

Hi Andrew, Inspiring story. Nice to meet you.

Hi. My name is Pierre.

I live in Trinidad in the Caribbean. I started learning to code in late 2019. Only recently found team treehouse and it is one of the best learning experiences I have had in coding. Feel free to check out my linked in. I am currently a bartender and I have started learning to code so that I may be able to earn a high salary and have can operate my own business in that field. I play competitive fighting games and am more of the more successful players locally.

Feel free to hit me up on linked in

Great plan! Yea it seems just sticking to a plan and following through is the best course of action. Keep up with learning on here and I am sure we will see great things. Have a great day and Ill send you a request on linked in.

Thanks Andrew Hinkson . Putting in a lot of work these days. My country is on semi lock down. So I am out of a job for a few weeks. I plan to use that time wisely.

We love to hear that, Pierre-Jodale Allard! Great to meet you and best of luck!

Hi, I'm Kelsey and I'm 29. I just started learning to code about a month ago so I am still working through the basics. My background is civil/structural engineering. I am a new military spouse and we are currently living in Japan so I'm hoping to transition to a more remote friendly career path. Lately my hobbies have been watching Korean dramas, learning new recipes, playing animal crossing, and exploring the parks around our neighborhood.

Hey Kelsey! We're practically neighbors! I'm living in Korea right now. Started a coding Journey for the same reason. Hoping to transition into something that is more suited for remote work/travel.

Glad to meet you!

Living in Japan must be awesome. I've only ever heard wonderful things about the people, food, and culture there. Are you in the Tokyo-area? Also given the pandemic you're probably so much safer in Japan than the USA.

Good luck on your coding adventures. Your background in engineering will likely help you since coding is simply a different way of saying "problem solving".

That's awesome Kelsey Fort ! How are you liking Japan so far? Oh yeah I'm also an avid gamer hehe -- I've been playing a lot of Animal Crossing and Hollow Knight myself.

As far as coding do you have an idea what area you would like to go into? Front end, back end, ai, machine learning etc.

HI Kelsey! It is always nice to hear about someone else just starting out :). I recently also got into Korean dramas, what are some of your favorites?

Courtney Pure I love it here! Awesome, yeah I have been spending so much time on my island lol I have been thinking about going into front end to start with then maybe back end after seeing how things go.

Mary Cloud Yes it can be so overwhelming starting out! I just finished Crash Landing On You, it was so cute but intense!

Trevor Maltbie I love it here so far. We live about an hour away from Tokyo. Yeah I am so thankful to be here during the pandemic. Everyone wears masks and follows the rules.

Thank you I hope that it will help too!

Great reading your story Kesley. I’ll keep an eye on your progress :-)

Hello everyone! My name is Todd Baker

I started coding my Junior year of high school. It wasn't until I was 23 and had recently finished earning an undergraduate degree in Mathematics that I began studying programming in depth.

Throughout my journey I've studied Java, SQL, HTML, VBA, C++, C#, Swift, Python, and PHP. Currently using Java, SQL, Python, and C# at my work.

You can find me on linkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ttbake/ and GitHub: https://github.com/ttbake

Outside of programming, I enjoy studying history, economics, and film theory/history.

Feel free to drop me a line or connect. I still feel like a relative novice, but I'm a fast learner and have grown a lot over the years.

Hi Todd,

Nice to meet you and read about your journey! Do you have a favorite language out of the ones you've studied so far?

Also film theory sounds interesting! Do you have a favorite era in film making. I'm very much in love with film noir.

Courtney,

So far Java has been my favorite. I love the versatility of object oriented programming and Java has been the easiest to use with the widest range of potential. That assessment of Java is only from my limited experience.

I tend to have directors that I gravitate towards. Watching a director's voice come through in their filmography is fascinating. Film noir is amazing. Night of the Hunter is one of my favorite movies and a great example of film noir.

Great to meet you, Todd Baker! Awesome to see the list of languages you've studied. Hope all goes well for you in the future!

I started learning code in college (2013) but I wasn't really good at it. I started to take it a bit more serious last year. I really want to be a good web developer and I really hope I can grow with you guys.

I like learning about this. I'm a musician, I like to play the piano.

Hey Luis Gerardo awesome project! I'll be sure to give you a follow on LinkedIn. How long have you been playing piano?

Hi Luis Gerardo! So awesome you like playing piano. I do as well, and my husband is a jazz pianist! What have you been playing recently?

I've been playing since 2014 but I'm no pro hahaha. Your husband is cool, I don't know him but, jazz piano? Awesome! Mary Cloud

Courtney Pure , Mary Cloud , it's nice to meet you! :)

We're glad you're here, Luis Gerardo! Best of luck!

Hey everyone, my name is Trevor. I am 31 years old and I live in Southern California with my wife and son (coming soon: a daughter!) along with our two cats. I enjoy photography, anime, playing board + card games, and exercising + hiking. I earned my Bachelor's degree in English Literature in 2011 and I work at Apple Retail.

I wrote my first bit of code around age 16 in HS where we built a basic website for teachers. I didn't take to it back then and then tried again around age 25. Then finally I started taking it seriously in the summer of 2019.

I am enrolled in the Full-Stack JavaScript TechDegree. I signed up for a Intro To Python course at my local community college that kicks off next month.

My goal is to make a complete career change and get a job at Apple HQ as a Software Engineer. I envision getting started in Software QA and then continuing to learn in order to become a full-fledged software developer.

Here is my github

If you want to connect with me on LinkedIn in you can do so here

You can find me on Twitter or Instagram too.

FS Javascript Techdegree student here also, hope your liking it as much as I am at the moment. Your coding journey kind of sounds like mine. Something I have always been interested in but also something I had trouble with sticking with. I will keep our fingers crossed for both of us. Good job on having a clear goal in mind. Im not so clear I just know I want to work in the development industry. Have a good day and Ill send you a request on LinkedIn.

Nice to meet you, Trevor Maltbie! Best of luck on your Techdegree and career change!

Hi All,

My name is Courtney Pure and I first started coding in around middle school I would say during the myspace days. I'm 31 and I'm a freelance animator who is adding programming to my list of tools I use to create! My goal and dream is to work as a technical director. I love being a liaison between programmers and artists as I've had some experience doing that in other settings. Currently I am finishing up the front end web development track here on Treehouse. For the role of TD I saw a lot call for python so that will be my next endeavor but for now I'm enjoying (and sometimes hating) javascript hahah.

Hobbies include watching cartoons, reading comics, standup paddleboard, camping / hiking, studying mycology and making beer with my girlfriend. Fun fact - I use to farm for a few years and have a pretty green thumb.

I'm active on both LinkedIn & Instagram. I hope to chat more with some of you soon!

Nice to meet you , Courtney! I haven't made any beer in a few years...really need to get back into it. What styles do you enjoy?

Not sure if it's gonna make me sound like an alcoholic, but I should have listed alcohol as a hobby. Haha

Clinton Hays hahah no no I really enjoy IPAs, stouts, and belgian style beers basically. I actually just got started so I'm am by no way well versed. But like I said I did farm and did grow hops (cascade, magnum) from rhizomes. They are pretty easy to grow and just love how they look in a field adding vertical interest to things.

What are some of your favorites?

Hi Courtney!

That is really cool that you used to farm. I have loved the handful of times I have gotten to help out several farming friends I have, and I wish my thumb was greener!

Also, being the liaison between programmers and artists sounds like a very rewarding space to be in, I'll be sure to follow you on Instagram. Nice to meet you and happy coding!

Hi Courtney, nice to meet you!

I also really enjoy gardening but my thumb is definitely not green. I still kill a lot of plants though recently I have been able to grow a fearsome basil plant and propagate it with clippings. Now if only I could get my rosemary to stay alive!!

What kinds of cartoons do you like to watch? I love Rick & Morty and Adventure Time but I also most frequently watch anime such as Hunter x Hunter or Hero Academia, Demon Hunter, One Piece, etc.

Good luck to you in your coding!

@Trevor Maltbie Ahh I must say rosemary is sometimes very finicky! I love it so much and am so so happy when it does well but for some reason unlike other herbs they don't go like super crazy. They like things just right in a way hahah.

That sounds awesome about the basil though! It's the perfect time of year as you could get some tomatoes and make some fresh sauce! One of my favorite summer activities - then I like freeze a lot of it for the winter unless I eat it all before then lol.

Oh I love Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Demon Slayer, Made in Abyss to name a few. You probably saw from other comments Avatar The Last Airbender, Legend of Korra. Currently I'm on season 2 of Kipo which is pretty neat series from Dreamworks. I'm so so excited for the new Aggretsuko season to come out. My Hero is so good! I also started Hunter x Hunter but fell off. I definitely have to give it another shot.

Courtney Pure I love anything belgian...quads are my absolute favorite. I am a big fan of trappist style ales. When I was back in the US my brother and I brewed a bit and were always tracking down good beers and visiting breweries. Lately I've gotten more into lagers and saisons. Can't really handle the big booze bombs anymore. Haha. I feel like I'm getting old. Plus, my wife is more into spirits...so she really got me into bourbon.

I think farming hops would be an awesome hobby...they really are beautiful.

Clinton Hays Ahhhh nice!! I've had like a 'clone' trappist beer that I had at a homebrew fest once but have not really dived into them as much. Also just looking it up there seems to be only one monastery in the US that makes them the rest are in Europe mostly it seems.

Yeah I definitely identify with not being able to have as many boozy beers lol but bourbon is a nice addition! I'm a big fan of gin.

Hey Courtney Pure – best of luck on your pursuit of working as a Technical Director! We're cheering you on!

Moved to Japan in 2013, I was thrown into a software development project management role. I learned UI design, a lot about Software Development Life Cycles (SDLC), and began programming at 30 years old.

I've managed engineers, but always wanted to better understand programming (to better help our team). Team Treehouse is awesome for that - I'm learning Python, Javascript, and improving my design skills in a fun way.

Check me out on LinkedIn

James Norberto Thanks for the add on LinkedIn!

Cool to hear your story and meet you, James Norberto!

Wow! So awesome to hear from all of you and make connections. Thanks for participating in Networking Thursday – hope you continue to form connections and cheer each other on!

Hi, my name is Valeriya. I currently live in Melbourne. I took a few programming electives while studying something else at university. Back then, I was going to switch to Computer Science degree but once I took some electives, I changed my mind. That was only because everyone in the first year already knew so much and seemed much more passionate about it. Made me think that because I am not as passionate about it, maybe it is not my thing. Despite of that, I received the best grades in my programming courses (better than my core subject as per my actual degree).

Now, I am getting back into programming, particularly with a purpose to learn how to build algorithmic trading bots. As I also trade stocks. So much learning ahead. But I am excited.

Hi everyone. I'm a bit late to the conversation, but I'm pleased to be here nonetheless. Hi, My name is Terry, 47 years old and I'm proud to say that I've been coding for about 10 days. I've been part of Treehouse for a few months, working through the front end developer track. I'm just starting JavaScript and loving it :-)

I was born in the UK but now call New Zealand my home. I work for one of the major banks here as a Quality Assurance Specialist. My main focus is software testing but also coaching my team through Agile methodology. The reason for joining Treehouse is because I want to become more 'T' shaped by picking up more technical skills. Not only to benefit me, but also my team. Reach out to me here or on Linkedin if anyone want's to follow my progress on #100DaysofCode. I'm loving the journey. It would be great to connect with you all.

Oh very cool sounds interesting!! I do like Bret Easton Ellis so I will check it out

Hi Terry Bowyer awesome to learn about your story! I am also learning JavaScript as well. I will send you a connect link on LinkedIn so we can see and share each other's progress.

How is it working as a QA Specialist? Also I'm always curious what kind of background do you need for jobs like that? Like what do / did you study to land in that field?

I love learning new things. I am currently learning how to make jewelry and learning more about how to be an entrepreneur in the creative field.

Hi! Nice to meet you and good luck with you projects :D. I'd like to see some of your designs, or jewelry. I contacted you via LinkIn :)

Hi Adjoa (@ewuradjoaabaaho ) nice to learn about your journey :D - I love meeting new artists who are adding programming to their toolbox. What kind of graphic design do you do? Jewelry is an awesome hobby, I had a few friends who were very into it. I filled in for a friend at her jewelry booth one summer and it was very meticulous work!

Hey All,

I'm Clinton Hays. I just started my coding journey this year at the age of 35. I've been living in Korea for the past 5 years while teaching English. It's given me lots of amazing opportunities for travel. I've seen parts of the world I never thought possible. That travel really pushed me to redirect my vision for the future. I want a career that will provide a comfortable living for my wife and me so we can do more of the things we love. The possibility of working remotely or as a self-employed freelancer are really what enticed me into pursuing Front End Web Dev.

My hobbies include cooking, anime, travel, crosswords, and mixology.

I got off social media last year so I've only got my LinkedIn, which I really need to update, and my Github.

Looking forward to connecting with everyone! :)

Hi Clinton, I am also teaching english but I am in Japan! I agree living across the word really opens a new perspective. I am also hoping to work remotely or as a freelancer as well. -Kelsey

Japan was our first choice, but seemed a bit harder to land jobs there at the time. We've managed to visit a few times. Where are you located?

Clinton Hays Yeah it can be a bit hard to find jobs here especially if you need visa sponsorship. We are in Yokohama so about an hour from Tokyo. We can't wait to visit Korea when traveling is safe again!

Hey Clinton Hays! Great to meet you. Best of luck on your FEWD Techdegree and pursuing your career.

Ryan Mouser Thanks! Really appreciate the networking forum!

Kelsey Fort That's awesome. I still have a dream of living in Japan...but I'd really like to move somewhere far north Hokaido island, maybe. Big dreams. IF travelling is ever allowed again and you find yourselves in Korea, send me a message. My wife and I live about an hour outside of Seoul.

Hi everyone! My name is Mary Cloud.

I started learning to code a couple of months ago and was thrilled to discover how much I enjoy it since I have been considering a career switch for a couple of years now. I am 32 and am currently (or was before the pandemic happened!) an opera singer.

I am working through the front-end web development track here at Treehouse, and I started a pretend professional website for Anne of Green Gables as a practice project :).

I love almost anything to do with the performing arts, cooking/baking, being outdoors, and reading.

My linked in is still geared towards my musician career, but feel free to connect with me there (LinkedIn) or on Instagram.

So awesome Mary Cloud! Do you think you will be merging your love for opera / music with coding?

Yes Courtney Pure, that is definitely a goal of mine! It would be so awesome to create some sort of collaboration between the two worlds. I really look forward to deepening my understanding of different aspects of coding in order to think of creative ways to do that.

Mary Cloud so cool! I can't wait to see what you come up with :D I followed you on instagram - I'm doing something similar but with animation where I'm trying to combine the two fields as that is what I studied in college.

It's always great to see artists merging their craft and code.

Mary, have you by chance heard of Louis Zukofsky's work "A"?

It's a wild, mixed media performance piece that is 2/3 experimental poetry, 1/3 poetry with sheet music, meant to be sung. I'm not versed well enough to say if it is distinctly operatic, but it's pretty cool either way.

Jordan young I haven’t heard of that, but I will totally check it out! I love singing modern and contemporary music.

It's very cool, but be warned it is a BEAST it's 800 pages, but like I said it's like a third where it's the collaborative part. Keep me posted!

Hey Mary Cloud – nice to meet you! Awesome to hear that you are looking to bring music and development together. We can't wait to see what you create!

Hi All! My name is Raul Rodriguez III (35 years old in 6 days)

I started learning to code about 4 years ago but didn't get a chance to deep dive as I was still in grad school. I'm a psychiatric social worker at an inpatient psychiatric hospital and on my last year of my practicum for my individual practitioner license but decided (pre-pandemic) that I want to switch gears into a more tech-oriented field so am hitting it pretty hard now.

I am working through the front-end web & full stack javascript development tracks here at Treehouse, and going through some other courses on Udemy. I'm also messing around with Flutter and Dart making an e-commerce app for my wife's pastry company.

In my free time (when I'm not coding) I'm usually watching a campy horror flick, playing around on Nintendo Switch, or going for a quick weekend getaway when there's not a global pandemic hindering such possibilities.

Feel free to connect with me on Instagram or LinkedIn

Hey Raul! Nice to meet you :) Awesome to hear that you're working on an app for your wife's pastry company alongside learning. Best of luck with everything!

Hi all! My name is Jordan and I've dabbled in so many things so far in my life (video editing, writing- I do have a book out on Amazon though!- being a network manager, being a docent at a museum and being a musician., etc)

Aside from the basic Myspace profile tweaks I did when I was a lot younger, I started to code 4 years ago and ambitiously tried to build an app from the ground up in Swift (spoiler alert, I got promoted before I was able to finish it). Then last year I picked up C# with the idea to make some games that I've been interested in.

Finally, I decided to perhaps tighten up my career skills and i'm taking the data science route which i'm really enjoying . It largely is Python based and it's going better than I thought.

In my "free time" i'm over here exploring the Hudson Valley in New York with my wife and one year old son.

Courtney Pure I am jealous of your beer making! I love porters. :) I have hops growing in my back yard, but I haven't done anything with them yet!

Mary Cloud I would definitely be interested in a coding/opera project!

Here is my Linkedin https://www.linkedin.com/in/jordanyoung/,

and i'm pretty active on Twitter too. https://twitter.com/settlingstatic

(Also, the Markdown Cheatsheet link below leads back to the main community site and the cheatsheet link is empty!)

Hey Jordan young! Awesome to hear your story! +1 on coding with MySpace (seems like a lot of us were doing that!)

Best of luck with everything!

Also - took a look at the Markdown Cheatsheet link issue. It appears to be working now! Let us know if you have any other issues.

Hi Jordan young that's awesome! And very cool to hear about your coding journey :D What is your book about?

I'm jealous you are in the Hudson Valley it's so beautiful there!! I'm on Long Island so not that far away but I'm counting down the days until I had upstate to go camping hahah You can totally just freeze the hops and they will be good for when you are ready to make some awesome brews

Hi again Courtney! My wife is from Levittown, where are you exactly?

And so my book (is not super light hearted), but it's about an exterminator who is a film fanatic, and stumbles in to hollywood and realizes that they are all disgusting so he understand which "pests" he needs to eliminate.

(It's called Pests, but fair warning it's gross and violent like a Bret Easton Ellis book/film).

Hello Everyone!

My name is Cori, and I am 27 years old. I am currently working as a customer service representative at Home Depot; however, I am hoping to transition into a junior developer role soon. I started learning HTML and CSS in high school, but my journey into coding is relatively recent.

I am a dog mom to a Terrier and a Labrador. I also like to spend my time reading, playing my guitar, or tending my garden.

I have completed a few coding projects outside of Treehouse; you can take a look at them on my GitHub here. I am also active on LinkedIn you can connect with me here.

I look forward to meeting everyone!

Hey Guys!! I'm Luis, I started programming when I was around 18 years old (I'm 25 now), and I've learned a lot of things but haven't mastered any of them, and treehouse is so great because the content is really organized, so I'm filling gaps and learning things on a realistic way. I'm hoping to take the best from here and become the Web Developer I've always wanted to be.

I'm taking the Front-End Web Development track, and basically I'm planning on taking them all XD. I'd really like to make friends and colleagues to share experiences, knowledge and maybe make projects together, that would be reaaally cool.

Hey team!

I've been on and off of coding but started taking it seriously only recently at age 31.

You can fine me on LinkedIn

I only just finished mastering the basics of the CLI, Git, and GitHub!

When I'm not coding or working, I'm making video game music, learning Korean, working out, practicing mathematics and logic, or hanging out with a close friend!

Glad to meet you, Shane Mesa.

Nice to meet you Shane Mesa ! That's awesome you make video game music -- do you have a page where we can listen?

Hi Cori Mims! I worked at Lowes long ago...the smell of paint, lumber, and garden still follows me to this day. Haha.

Have fun on your coding adventures! :)

Hi everyone!

I started learning to code last year at 29 years old. I am a former mental health counselor turned media designer. I was burnt out and decided to transition into web development/UX design. I started learning to code before starting my second Masters in Media Design. I just graduated and have recently started working on the Front End track with Treehouse. I'm also learning to use Webflow right now so the only project I have is my portfolio page which started out as a template, but I customized the colors and popup windows in the Latest Work section. It's definitely a work in progress, but it's my first site so I'm super proud of myself. Any advice would be welcome to make it look better!

Kelsey Fort I absolutely love K-dramas!! What are you watching these days? If you want any recommendations. I might be able to help. In addition, to watching all kinds of TV (Anime, K-dramas, International shows, Time period shows, HGTV, etc), I love Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and traveling when I can.

I have had a lot of setbacks with coding and have not been as consistent as I would have liked to be, but here's my Github and my LinkedIn. I have tried to start the #100DaysOfCode challenge and didn't make it so I'm gearing up to try again. Would love any pointers and Accountability buddies who would like to take the journey with me!!

I look forward to connecting with you all!

Best, Asha
