Points!

Howdy Everyone! :sunglasses:

We just rolled out a brand new feature this afternoon: points!

Everyone now has a points total that is associated with their profile. Here is a quick breakdown of how points are given:

  • Complete a Quiz: 6 Points
  • Complete Code Challenge: 12 Points
  • Receive a New Badge: 30 Points
  • Complete a Project or Deep Dive: 60 points
  • Complete a Learning Adventure: 150 Points

When points get added to your profile they are generally organized by topic. Receive a new CSS badge and get 30 points added to the CSS category in your profile. When you complete an entire Project, Deep Dive or Learning Adventure those “achievement points” are added to your total points instead of being associated with a specific topic.

We’ve integrated everyone’s points total next to their name here in the Forum and added a points section to profile pages.

But wait, that’s not all! :zap:

We have also added mini-profiles to the forums. When you click on a name (or the number next to it) that person’s mini-profile will appear. These are the perfect way to quickly learn about someone and what their strengths are.

We are all very excited to roll out this new feature and hope you are too! :shipit:

How many points are there in the system right now?

Awesome! Great work! :)

Question: Is there a way to see what the Maximum amount of points for a given topic is? Or how is this indicated? :)

Awesome! I love this new system!

Cool! I was hoping Treehouse would implement a points system one day. Looking forward to seeing how the new points system works with earning the badges.

Very Cool

Tommy: This is exciting!!! Love me some treehouse :)

I love it! I need more points!

Am I really the person with the most points? Come on guys! Anyway, actually creating projects are more important than the points you've earned but this feature is really motivating I must say =)

I need more upvoting! Oops, secrets :)

This is soo cool : D love earning points

Fan-freaking-tastic! Something like this is just what I was looking for as another incentive to continue and push through the barriers. I am a working dad that doesn't have time nor money to return to college and Treehouse has renewed my sense of hope of learning new skills for the marketplace.

Cool! When can we see a top100 ?

Haha, that didn't take long!

So the points displayed on the site right now aren't totally correct - everybody's probably seeing a total that's about twice what it should be. Calculation error on our end that we just now caught - we'll be working to fix it in the next couple of days. Just don't be surprised when the numbers change.

I think the point system and being able to look at a person miniprofile, and see what their strengths are is cool. It's like little infographics. One other thing I wanted to say, I truly appreciate treehouse working on my phone. The other sites In the online web education category leave a little bit to be desired in the responsive category. Now I'm going to see what my point total is. So nervous.

love it! LIke say, if I am interested in a CSS course, but right now I am doing a Ruby course, how do I track that?

Sorry Drew Butcher, no points for extra credit right now . But I'll give ya a high-five for it! :hand:

Riley Hilliard my way is very similar to yours in the way you process it all. I like your styling and might pinch that idea >.<

I think the only difference I have is it is a PHP function that you just pass your username to.

I agree it would be nice for the json feed to give the point values within it and then use something like Easy Pie Chart to display them.

Riley Hilliard I am going to add this into my php function. I gather you are going to adapt your code for it? may I ask that you will use to display the graph.

Jack

Tommy Morgan Niceeee! Going to get started with the new data today!

Jack Sharpe I am not entirely sure that I will use a graph yet. Always difficult to choose how to display data like this, but since the main person it will be intended for is a portfolio viewer, I may just try and keep it as concise as possible and not overload the widget with too much data and statistics. At this point I think I am going to start off with just displaying the points number alongside the badges count.

So, I was wondering, TeamTreehouse is aware of the bug that if a user changes their Treehouse Profile Name, the link to their profile and the mini-profile/point display next to their name is no longer rendered, right?

I noticed that points are now broken out achievement points and forum points.

Would it be possible to have that added to the JSON, so a widget could be made of Treehouse forum activity?

Please.

It'd be cool if we could have a custom avatar, and be able to spend points on upgrading our little avatar. Then it gives points more meaning.

If you track your courses with degreed.com you can log time you personally spent on the course. Otherwise, I would say each course on average takes 2-6 hours depending on the level of difficulty and the time dedicated to following along.
