Howdy Everyone!
We just rolled out a brand new feature this afternoon: points!
Everyone now has a points total that is associated with their profile. Here is a quick breakdown of how points are given:
- Complete a Quiz: 6 Points
- Complete Code Challenge: 12 Points
- Receive a New Badge: 30 Points
- Complete a Project or Deep Dive: 60 points
- Complete a Learning Adventure: 150 Points
When points get added to your profile they are generally organized by topic. Receive a new CSS badge and get 30 points added to the CSS category in your profile. When you complete an entire Project, Deep Dive or Learning Adventure those “achievement points” are added to your total points instead of being associated with a specific topic.
We’ve integrated everyone’s points total next to their name here in the Forum and added a points section to profile pages.
But wait, that’s not all!
We have also added mini-profiles to the forums. When you click on a name (or the number next to it) that person’s mini-profile will appear. These are the perfect way to quickly learn about someone and what their strengths are.
We are all very excited to roll out this new feature and hope you are too!

Treehouse Guest TeacherHaha, that didn't take long!
So the points displayed on the site right now aren't totally correct - everybody's probably seeing a total that's about twice what it should be. Calculation error on our end that we just now caught - we'll be working to fix it in the next couple of days. Just don't be surprised when the numbers change.

15,479 PointsI think the point system and being able to look at a person miniprofile, and see what their strengths are is cool. It's like little infographics. One other thing I wanted to say, I truly appreciate treehouse working on my phone. The other sites In the online web education category leave a little bit to be desired in the responsive category. Now I'm going to see what my point total is. So nervous.

Treehouse Guest TeacherErnest: maybe... :)
John Locke
15,479 Points@Ernest I don't want to see Treehouse turn into Hacker News. Stack Overflow has a good system. Something like karma points for actually helping people would be cool.

Best, Drew Butcher
Yu (Dilys) Sun
5,812 Pointslove it! I want to make an additional suggestion, let me know where's the best place to submit : I want treehouse to have a feature that allows me to save and track which sub-curriculum that I want to take. LIke say, if I am interested in a CSS course, but right now I am doing a Ruby course, how do I track that?
Matt Spiel
2,617 PointsSorry Drew Butcher, no points for extra credit right now . But I'll give ya a high-five for it!
Nick Pettit
Treehouse TeacherDrew Butcher: You can't get points for it right now, but Jeremy Jantz and I are working on some stuff that will tie this together in the next few months. Stay tuned!
Daniel Ram
Courses Plus Student 14,808 PointsCan we buy stuff with points? That would be cool. Kinda like a little game as you progress in your skills.
Jack Sharpe
4,088 PointsThis is really awesome guys. Will there be a way to intergrate it into personal website?
Gareth Powell
Courses Plus Student 7,016 PointsNice! And agree with Jack Sharpe - be great to show these point off to potential employers :)
Jack Sharpe
4,088 PointsI have written a simple json reader for displaying your badges on personal sites (based in PHP environment) I might set about making something simpler for people to use.
That is if people are interested?
@jack_sharpe tweet me if you want the php badge display now before i finish my site and release it.
Gareth Powell
Courses Plus Student 7,016 PointsThanks Jack Sharpe.
That's very kind of you although would there be a cost?
Sorry to question but I'm currently a skint student! No probs if there is, I'll check back another time.

Riley Hilliard
Courses Plus Student 17,771 PointsJack Sharpe & Gareth Powell, I just did a write up on how to make a treehouse badges widget yesterday actually! Right now there is no points data in the user JSON that treehouse provides, but I am hoping they add this soon.
Jack Sharpe
4,088 PointsRiley Hilliard my way is very similar to yours in the way you process it all. I like your styling and might pinch that idea >.<
I think the only difference I have is it is a PHP function that you just pass your username to.
I agree it would be nice for the json feed to give the point values within it and then use something like Easy Pie Chart to display them.
Jeremy Pihl
528 PointsWoot!!! this looks awesome! Can't wait to rack up some points!
Jeremy Pihl
528 PointsYeah, I kinda posted also just to see my points XD
Tommy Morgan
Treehouse Guest TeacherRiley Hilliard: ask and you shall receive... check the JSON data again.
Jack Sharpe
4,088 PointsThanks Tommy Morgan.
Riley Hilliard I am going to add this into my php function. I gather you are going to adapt your code for it? may I ask that you will use to display the graph.
Jack
Riley Hilliard
Courses Plus Student 17,771 PointsTommy Morgan Niceeee! Going to get started with the new data today!
Jack Sharpe I am not entirely sure that I will use a graph yet. Always difficult to choose how to display data like this, but since the main person it will be intended for is a portfolio viewer, I may just try and keep it as concise as possible and not overload the widget with too much data and statistics. At this point I think I am going to start off with just displaying the points number alongside the badges count.
Gareth Powell
Courses Plus Student 7,016 PointsThanks Riley Hilliard and Jack Sharpe .
I have bookmarked Riley's website and Jack; I will add you when I next get on Twitter.
Thanks guys for the help, advice and free stuff - very kind of you.

Tommy Morgan
Treehouse Guest TeacherMohamad Nur Amin Shahril all points were rewarded retroactively, so it doesn't matter if you finished your projects and deep dives a year ago or if you're just getting them done today, you still get the points :)
Mohamad Nur Amin Shahril

Riley Hilliard
Courses Plus Student 17,771 PointsJack Sharpe That's awesome! Looking forward to the post. PHP is high up on my list of 'things to learn' I backtracked your code and made a code pen of it, but i'll let you finish your blog post and share that with everyone. Neat stuff!

Liz Kain
3,896 PointsAwesome. Agreeing with all ^ above.
Any chance points/badges will be available for Bonus Series content in the future? I know it shows up in our activity feed, but would be a great motivator for more in depth sections. Thanks!
Gareth Powell
Courses Plus Student 7,016 PointsWell done Jack Sharpe.
I also agree with Liz Kain in that it would be great to fully understand this via a Bonus Series or even a short course? I'm pretty un-technical in comparison to you guys :)
Great work - keep it up!
Jack Sharpe
4,088 PointsGareth Powell Are you wanting a course on how I implemented the badges on a site.
Gareth Powell
Courses Plus Student 7,016 PointsHi Jack Sharpe .
Yes, I think a course from Treehouse on how to do what you did will really help me, unless there is one on here already? To be honest, I haven't fully looked.
What language(s) did you use to implement the badges to your site?
Thanks, Gareth
Gareth Powell
Courses Plus Student 7,016 PointsAh, I see it now - thanks Jack Sharpe .

3,988 PointsSo, I was wondering, TeamTreehouse is aware of the bug that if a user changes their Treehouse Profile Name, the link to their profile and the mini-profile/point display next to their name is no longer rendered, right?
Examples, me and jacksharpe...
Christopher Peters
1,927 PointsHi Mikhail Bukhonko, thanks for pointing out the bug! I've logged it, so it should be fixed soon!
Edit: you should also have also received a small token of thanks in the form of the 'Exterminator' badge!

39,199 PointsTommy Morgan & Matthew Spiel -
I noticed that points are now broken out achievement points and forum points.
Would it be possible to have that added to the JSON, so a widget could be made of Treehouse forum activity?
Please.
Tommy Wells
Courses Plus Student 160 PointsIt'd be cool if we could have a custom avatar, and be able to spend points on upgrading our little avatar. Then it gives points more meaning.
