Give Feedback on Upcoming WordPress Courses

Hi WordPress Treehousers!

I wanted to share with you all a big picture roadmap of some of the WordPress courses we are thinking about doing in 2015. Not all of these are set in stone, although we have begun work on a number of these.

  • Modern WordPress Workflow (local dev, staging, git, WP-CLI)
  • Genesis Theme Development
  • WooCommerce Theme Development
  • PHP for WordPress
  • i18n Internationalization in WordPress
  • Accessibility in WordPress Themes
  • SEO for WordPress
  • WordPress Walker Class

I would love to hear people's thoughts on what courses they want to see us do, whether it is courses on this list or ones not mentioned.

Hey, Zac, not often I get a request for response from a teacher. So, as a Wordpress Developer and MOD here on Treehouse I think the best order for course priority would be:

  1. PHP for Wordpress. I see a lot of questions here on the forums regarding disconnects between PHP and Wordpress. I think the PHP application course is good, but it leave a huge gap between shirts for mike and WP. Also doesn't cover a lot of topic in PHP that you need for WP.

  2. Modern Wordpress Work Flow. There are two reasons this is my number two. First Version control is extremely important for developers to know and it's slightly harder to do with WP. Second, I would like to see what your work flow is like and maybe improve my own.

  3. SEO for WordPress

  4. Accessibility in WordPress Themes

  5. i18n Internationalization in WordPress

  6. WordPress Walker Class

  7. Genesis Theme Development

  8. WooCommerce Theme Development

I personally would like to see Genesis Theme Development a bit higher up, but that's just a personal preference because I like genesis. Other then that, I agree 100% about the order.

  1. WooCommerce Theme Development
  2. Modern WordPress Workflow (local dev, staging, git, WP-CLI)

and a few suggestions:

Or WordPress security in general. It's a very important topic with WordPress and it could use a proper course or workshop.

I'm really looking forward the 'PHP for WordPress' course. I find a huge gap between 'hooks-actions and filters' and the easier ones.

I think it'd be necessary something in between 'Wordpress Theme Development' and 'Wordpress Hooks-Actions and Filters'. In my opinion the difficulty gap is huge.

BTW, I really love your courses Zac.

Cheers!

As a new WP user, I would like to see Modern Wordpress Workflow. There are great courses here on Treehouse that go over specific tasks, but I'd like to see an A-Z approach on how a real developer sets up for a project, and sees it through to completion. I feel that right now, I have to piece together a lot of the more specific information I'm learning.

Second, I'd like to see SEO. One of the main reasons I started here at Treehouse, was to work on my own business, and not necessarily to find a job in web design (although that's always an option). One of the biggest boosts I've had is Dan Gorgone's SEO course, and I'd like to follow it up with SEO for Wordpress.

After that, I'm open to any type of theme development class.

My interest would be these and maybe how 2 & 3 can work with 1. I have one government client, soon to be two and I want to make sure I can incorporate 2 and 3 successfully.

Good feedback. Unfortunately we don't have anything on the books that would get into WooCommerce and Genesis together specifically, but with the individual knowledge hopefully you should be able to work it all out :)

  • Modern WordPress Workflow caught my eye immediately — I'm struggling to nail this down lately and would love an expert to walk me through!

  • SEO for WordPress is my 2nd choice, something I'm completely new to, but know I need this training.

  • PHP for WordPress is my 3rd choice. The only PHP I know is what I've worked with (sparingly) through the themes I lightly customize. More knowledge of how to call different functions, etc would be invaluable.

Thanks for all your work Zac!

WooCommerce and SEO!

The PHP tie-in sounds awesome, as does the Workflow class (particularly because that sounds like it would be very rooted in the feel of real day-to-day development!).

Thanks for all of the great courses so far. My top three are:

  1. Modern WordPress Workflow (local dev, staging, git, WP-CLI) - Especially how to develop locally and then merge with the live site without losing any activity (e.g. comments) that happened since I "forked". Ideally, the solution could be cheap/free, i.e. avoid the Github monthly fee or the WP Migrate Pro price.
  2. PHP for WordPress
  3. Genesis Theme Development

.PHP for wordpress, i'm specialized in wordpress, and sometimes don't understand all the php (even if i have good basis and already develop themes wuth genesis or underscores) but i have no interest for the moment to become a php dev, and i don't find this type of course anywhere! So yes that super important and urgent!

.Woocommerce theme dev, and no other course outside neither (a part woothemes doc)

The others are interesting too but there is courses outside, PHP for wp ,and woocommerce theme dev are nowhere else! so they can be a great asset for us and for treehouse!

most of wp themes are multipurpose theme, you have made tutorial for blog, portfolio like wordpress theme. now its time for,

Genesis Theme Development

WooCommerce Theme Development

think that your student can make multipurpose theme.

I am contractor at codeable: https://codeable.io/ , best place to be for a wordpress developper!, they are partners with woothemes, for the moment i am not advanced in woocommerce to take these tasks. so it would be really interesting to have deep courses on woocommerce (not only theming, but also their plugins ,and how to extend and modify them), also i think advanced students here can apply at codeable :-)

  1. Genesis Theme Development (A big thumbs up, I'm a huge fan of Genesis and I don't believe there is a course like this which exists. Treehouse could do a really good job here).
  2. PHP for WordPress
  3. Modern WordPress Workflow (local dev, staging, git, WP-CLI)
  4. WordPress Walker Class
  5. WooCommerce Theme Development

Looking forward to seeing these courses in the near future (if they go ahead), cheers Zac!

That is a very good looking list :)

Personal opinion and nothing more...

Here are my top picks:

  1. PHP for WordPress - This would be worthwhile if there's still much more to say above the current courses. I've picked up quite a bit just by going through the WordPress Development track, so I would be disappointed if this course would just rehash what I've already learned.

  2. Accessibility in WordPress Themes - I haven't come across much online where this topic is covered in video form, so I would say there's a need for this to be covered in some depth.

  3. WordPress Walker Class - just got wind of this in the From Bootstrap to WordPress course, so getting more instruction on this would be very helpful.

  4. Genesis Theme Development - definitely interesting and I would hope the material would get very advanced. There's already so much online that it would have to be advanced to add value.

Feedback on others:

SEO for WordPress - I would only be interested in this if it got very technical; if it was just the same stuff about content, keywords, meta info, etc. it really wouldn't add much to the million other SEO resources available online.
