me key lessons for work and for life,
as I call it, a pathway to easier living.

So, let's dive in first
as to how I got here.

So, 10 year old me used to do
lettering on my school notebooks and

I used to love presenting the stuff
that I was owning with fonts.

And I thought, at the time, well,

what could be a career that
interests me to do that?

And, funny enough, it was advertising.

So I wanted to become an advertiser.

So I went to graphic design school
to pursue this career until

I realized that ads is
not really my thing.

And so
throughout that program across the years,

I learned a lot about web design,
all about CSS, HTML,

and I became more and
more interested in that field.

As I graduated in 2015,
I got my first UI job in

a local Montreal company
that built softwares for

other businesses, and
I basically fell in love with it.

And here I am now, five plus years later,
working in the field.

And as we mentioned earlier in my intro,
working in startups like Busbud and

LANDR from the Montreal design community.

And as I like to call what I do, helping
someone somewhere do something but easier.

So, through this whole journey,

I learned a ton of lessons that I
wanted to share with you all today.

So product design is problem solving.

No matter which field you come from,
your experience is an asset.

The soft skills acquired along
the way will serve you for life.

The power is in the process,

then it's a matter of finding just
the right solution to each problem.

So throughout the presentation,

I will be uncovering the lessons behind
what those obscure sentences mean.

Maybe some of you may or
may not know too much about the field,

but it can be a very
interesting refresher or

new things that can be of use to
you in your studies or your career.

So, let's start with the basics.

So what is product design, actually?

So, in principle, it's about facilitating
situation A into becoming situation B.

And the whole mystery,
basically, relies on the how,

how do we make a situation go from A to B?

So, in general, it can take many forms,
a physical object or

tool, an action, a word,
all of those or anything really.

But let's go over a couple of examples.

So let's say you have friends that come
over to your place very last minute and

they're very hungry.

And the situation B would be
that they are all happy and

fed, you can have a good time.

So how would you go about
solving this situation?

the ideas that you may have for
how to solve this problem.

So these are very interesting suggestions.

Looking at the issue in a tech and
product standpoint,

one of the ways that we could solve for
this is to have an app

that helps people order food being
delivered to you much easier than,

for example,
if you don't have food to cook for

your friends or
the takeout place is closed.

So many situations that can be alleviated
by having a product to solve for

this problem.

So when you scale that situation
A to situation B principle,

you're able to see that there are more and

more problems that come with such
a solution that can be solved as well.

So, for example, how can we make sure
that people get their food faster?

One of the solution maybe by not
offering them restaurants that

are too far from their homes, so that
the delivery times can be reasonable and

everybody gets their food
in a reasonable manner.

Another issue could be how do we make
sure that the food is appealing?

So, one of the solutions may be sending
pro photographers to professionally

shoot the food so that it looks as
appetizing as if you entered the place,

and smells, and saw what other people
in the restaurant order, for example.

So in a nutshell, product design
is definitely asking tons of

those questions over and over and
over again to solve problems.

And when I understood that, product design
was just no longer about UI only and

UX, but
really uncovering problems to solve.

So I stopped being afraid
of asking questions.

[LAUGH] The shy me really
evolved into understanding that

comprehension of the problem
at hand is everything.

And I like to basically think
of myself as a detective on

a mission to like uncover
information about a problem.

So, on the next sentence,
no matter which field you come from,

your experience is an asset.

I see that in the way that solving
problem is something that we do daily,

even if it's not necessarily
related to product design itself,

but knowledge from everywhere,
every field,

every thing that you've studied or
learned about in the past

is increasing your ability to come up
with richer solutions to your problems.

So, by doing that, we're also
able to take into account what we

consider being the margins of the problem
that you have to solve at hand.

So, for example, if you take the alpha and

the omega of a situation,
usually we would want to build for

the majority of cases that find
themselves to be in the middle.

But those majority of cases don't
necessarily encompass the absolutes.

So, whenever we only design for
the middle,

it becomes difficult to include those.

So, for example,
if you are building an app for

people's self-diagnosis of
a medical issue, for example.

And, on one hand, you have professional
doctors, medical experts, and

on the other hand, people who are not
at all in the field of medicine,

building for the majority of
cases may not necessarily reach

Those polar opposites on the spectrum.

And knowing that makes it easier to
comprehend that by going out of our way.

Going out of our comfort zone,
and reaching out to people or

situations, or
examples out of our knowledge base.

We're able to create richer
solutions that are as

close as possible to including
those polar opposites.

Of course, all of this is a theory.

It's never easy to include
everybody all the time.

But it's something that
usually is good to strive for

whenever we build products.

So bridging that gap as much as possible.

So the second lesson that being
a product designer taught me through

this situation is that, I got better
at nurturing my sense of curiosity.

So making a very conscious
effort to consider

different realities in our
own goes really a long way to

understand more of the problem
that we have at hand.

Whether or not we are coming
from a graphic design field,

or engineering field.

Or maybe you did some
agricultural studies, or

anything that's not product design,
is helpful in doing product design.

So I'm very curious.

And yeah, I watch a lot of
science shows on [LAUGH] YouTube.

So that's that.

The third sentence is,

So I already mentioned a couple of those.

So curiosity, openness,
they're really key in product design.

But so are empathy and
judgments suspension.

So, for example,
if we center back to the understanding of

the problem at hand that we need to solve.

We are always technically
are supposed to look for

new information to better
understand that problem.

And whenever we don't have
necessarily the the nurtured skills,

soft skills to facilitate our
conversations with people,

new information has difficulty entering
our understanding of the problem.

So whenever we are working on being open,
curious,

empathetic, and
non judgmental of ideas and

of new information,
they have a much easier

access to what we think
the problem can be.

And giving us better insight as
well as to how we can solve for it.

So it's a very favorable posture for

team collaboration,
receiving positive feedback,

and improving the solutions that we build.

So that the product in the end
is just that much better.

So the third learning is that, I learned
to let go and be a better team player.

So we often want to
guard our understanding

of things that can stuck
us in a loop sometimes.

So even though we may have part
of information that is true,

it's not necessarily complete enough for
us to move forward with

the understanding of the problem
that will be part of the solution.

So being open to team feedback can
only make that product better.

So the fourth sentence is really
the power is in the process.

It's a very important
aspect of solving problems.

It's is really how we go
about doing it with our team.

So when we look at the general
flow of how people solve

problems in general in real life,

is clarify the problem to solve and
gather information.

So this is a little bit what we've seen so
far in this presentation.

So asking questions, being curious,
gathering information.

The second part is to generate ideas and

refine the solutions based off of our own
criteria of how that solution can work.

And I will come back to it a little
later in the presentation.

And the third one is plan
the implementation of the solution.

So how do we make that happen?

So this is fairly simple.

Usually we do it without even
thinking about it consciously.

But whenever we start working with people,
more people, a team,

everything gets more complex.

So basically,
a couple of months ago I just for

fun decided to try and
map out the process and

the steps that are part of my day-to-day.

Obviously it's in French.

But most of the steps are pretty clear.

So we go through ideation,
research, clarification,

conception, delivery, and maintenance.

They all go into loops of iterations.

And we all have different
deliverables at each of these steps.

So making sure the process is clear for
everybody makes for

a more robust solution as well.

Because we do share,
feel responsibility of how

the product is built with
other people from our team.

And not everybody is responsible for

the same things at the same
stage of the project.

And so
it happens that people wear many hats and

have different notions of what is possible

to do in terms of input on their end.

And so this makes alignment and

communication fundamental
in that situation.

So the learning of this
whole process slide is

really to learn how to
manage your expectations

of other people and
their outputs in the team.

And as well as what they
expect of you as well.

So that that constant
process of clarification and

alignment, really helps
avoiding the cost of

expected to be delivered.

And, yep, so
it's worth the time to basically

spend a moment really clarifying what's

expected of people in this process.

So the last sentence is really about,

that alignment means to
also be aligned on what

are the constraints of the project
that we're talking about.

So it's a matter of finding just
the right solution to each problem.

Because not all solutions
that we can come up with can

comply with the project's constraints.

So an easy way for
me to explain this principle is that,

let's say we have an equilateral triangle.

And each angle is time, scope, and budget.

And in order for the solution, or

the idea that you come
up with to be balanced,

they're all interdependence
with each other.

So, for example,
if during a project you turn out to

have less time on your hands
to complete that project.

Innovatively, the balance of these
things need to be worked on in order for

the scope and the budget to fit
the timeframe that you have left.

And so you end up with having
to potentially find solutions

that can work with less time,
with less scope.

So a reduced amount of things
within the solution and

inevitably less budget as well.

So learning this much
more adaptive to change,

especially in business but also in life,

hidden costs to decisions
that are out of our

control can just not, we can't avoid them.

So change happens all the time.

And just knowing that you are doing
your best within the constraints

tremendous amount of peace.

So now we can see a little
bit broader like what

those sentences mean in their true form.

Is basically saying that in
order to resolve any situation,

communication with people around you.

So being accountable for your
contributions bring clarity in regards to

and peace in times of change.

be used in work, in school,

So projects that they may or
may not present to investors

not necessarily know about.

But that can put a lot of pressure and

strain on something like time to market or
time to development.

So maybe if someone comes to you and
just asks for

example that we need to launch
this project as soon as possible.

We don't necessarily have
an impact on why that is but

to make sure that we are able
to build a website or

an app within that timeframe
with those constraints.

Because we don't necessarily
control what is being presented or

sold to investors or people outside
of the production team basically.

So I do work with UX research.

We just recently added a UX
researcher in our team.

It's definitely something that we're
striving to do more often as we

are still a small team of designers,
we're only six and

working on about eight different products.

And so we definitely have to make time for
UX research but

this person is definitely
going to help us.

We still do though make sure to
go get the information ourselves

when they are crucial to
the development of the product.

So if, for example,

we need to know how many users
clicked on that specific button.

So that in the next product
iteration that we make,

we don't hide that feature or

that it would have an impact on our
metrics or on the users' experience.

How long does it take to learn the process
of a UX designer and landing a job?

I'm a new UX design student.

This is a very interesting
question because in my

journey I did not necessarily
study UX design in school.

So most of the things that
I learned I had to learn

them on the job [LAUGH], basically.

And because the field of UX is
really new and ever evolving,

things that I learned five
years ago when I started

definitely have
a foundational truth to them.

But the technologies evolve the ways and

patterns of UX evolve as well.

When you have leaders in
technology like Facebook,

Google, Amazon, Twitter,
etc, that are constantly

trying out new products and
new ways to build things.

It's definitely a challenge to keep it up.

So I would say try it out for yourself by

trying to make those in
your portfolio as well.

Even if you're not yet
at a job for for UX,

train your eyes to recognize the patterns,

dive into Google material library or

iOS development specs to learn about those

have fun with it.

Because this is really just the best way
to learn and to improve your skills,

important to have a degree for UX design?

I would say not necessarily around me and
as I've mentioned in the presentation,

there are a lot of people who come
from very different backgrounds in UX.

So some people were developers before,
other people were

in product management,
I was coming from graphic design.

So it's not necessary for the field or
especially working in product,

but it's definitely an asset
because there are still

foundational information that
you can get out of a degree.

But there probably are a couple
of training sessions or

things exactly like Treehouse
provides to train in that area.

So another question here is how
do you choose who participates in

the research and how do we get
a wide range of people involved?

That's a very interesting question.

I would say it really depends on the
company's capacity to acquire test users.

Usually, whenever you
can identify a problem

you have also to know for

sure what constitutes a problem for this.

So let's say for
example a couple of users messaged

coming from a variety of

backgrounds can definitely
find their pathway there.

How do you keep up with the constantly

that's very easy to do,
is kind of piggybacking

because they have to work

Every single year, I think a couple

So, it's easier to follow,

on the day to day cuz this
is more with the devs.

that's not the type of
world that we live in.

the opposite wave when I see,

amazing UX design online, I'm like,

wow, how can I make

And this is really challenging
because it's not just me.

So UX,
I like to consider it as a team effort.

So yes, I may design the experience,
the flows in the screens,

but there's also the developers
that implemented,

the people in marketing that sell it,
etc, etc.

So it's a very team effort load to carry,
basically.

I see here, what's the difference between
product management and project management?

This is a very interesting question.

And I think a lot of people wonder,
myself included,

because project management
seems to be very much

about managing the timelines,
managing the organization

of when are projects supposed to start and
end?

What's the relation with the client
who ordered the project and

make sure that it's delivered on time.

So I think it's a more
delivery-based role.

Whereas product management is
really thinking of roadmaps and

of development avenues for
the product that you're managing.

So basically, if you have to
roll out a couple of features

within the next couple of months,
which one do you start with?

Why, how does it make sure that you
hit your goals, you hit your metrics?

For example, if you want to acquire
10,000 new subscriptions to your product.

This is the goal that,
by doing product management,

you're trying to find ideas and
solutions to get there

the timeline of the project.

It's very much more focused on the bigger

picture of what the product
is going to become,

rather than the day to day of how

Definitely, I think it's
something that you can nurture and

acquire though, rather than just be.

Because every single way of
approaching things have its own value.

So for example, if you are able to
see things in a very objective way,

We still have to remember that being
a product designer within the company

is also about incorporating business needs
into the product that you're building.

So there's a huge, huge,
huge portion that's definitely about

making the experience good for
the people on the other end of the screen.

But it's also to incorporate
business decisions.

And as someone asked earlier,

the things that are out of your
control and the decisions that

you may not be aware of that still
have to be done within the work.

of use to a product designer

But also we have to be objective
when it comes to doing business.

necessarily give you an idea of

a range because it varies wildly,
depending on your location.

So whether you're in Canada, the US,
UK, or anywhere in the world

the cost of living in your area.

Also the city,
from city to city it depends.

So, my advice would be really
to do some preparation work

with websites like Glassdoor or a PayScale
to see in your area in your city for

that position and
those couple of years of experience

the school degree that you have,

Yeah, the one that I used to
reference to a lot is Airbnb.

I know that they have changed
up some things in the past.

They're not necessarily social media,
