[MUSIC] 0:00 Hey there, I'm Michelle Zohlman. 0:09 My pronouns are she, her. 0:11 I work at Treehouse as the training program manager. 0:13 Whether you're new to tech or not, you've probably experienced imposter syndrome. 0:17 You may not know the name, but almost all of us have felt it. 0:22 So what is imposter syndrome? 0:27 It is when you experience feelings of anxiety or 0:29 nervousness around how well you think you're doing your job or an assignment. 0:32 You might worry that you are not good enough for your role or 0:37 worry that others are judging your performance. 0:40 To put it simply, imposter syndrome is feeling like a fraud in your career. 0:43 As you are starting a new career or learning a new skill here at Treehouse, 0:48 that fraud feeling might creep in at times. 0:52 Here's the thing, you are not a fraud. 0:55 This is normal for you to feel. 0:57 In fact, up to 70% of people have experienced it. 0:59 Whether you're experiencing imposter syndrome yourself, or 1:03 if you think a peer might be, it can show up in different ways. 1:07 I wanna talk about three common ways with you today. 1:10 Playing the role of a superhero or a perfectionist. 1:14 Someone with imposter syndrome may try to play the role of the superhero or 1:19 a perfectionist trying to prove their worth. 1:23 Think back to when you were in grade school and 1:27 someone was always raising their hand. 1:29 Maybe at the time you thought it was annoying or 1:32 they were being a teacher's pet. 1:34 Well, they might have been dealing with imposter syndrome. 1:36 It's quite possible they were trying to prove they belonged there. 1:40 Another way it might show up is that someone may isolate themselves 1:44 in fear of being exposed. 1:48 This may appear as being fearful to share your code or 1:50 help someone, even if you know the answer. 1:53 Maybe you like to work alone. 1:57 That's totally fine. 1:59 But you may be doing it to the extent where you're not asking for 2:01 assistance when you should. 2:04 Chances are you could be isolating yourself because you're 2:07 afraid to make a mistake and believe that if you do, 2:10 someone will realize you aren't meant to be there, which isn't true at all. 2:13 Being an expert. 2:19 Just hearing the term expert may make you uncomfortable or uneasy. 2:21 You might think, 2:26 there's no way I can be an expert when I'm feeling this imposter syndrome. 2:27 Here is the truth. 2:33 As you keep learning with Treehouse and 2:34 in your career, you're becoming an expert in your area. 2:36 Imposter syndrome may creep in and make you feel as if you're not a pro. 2:39 But don't let that stop you. 2:43 Whichever way or ways you might experience imposter syndrome, it's normal. 2:46 It's not rare. 2:52 However, we want you to get to know imposter syndrome beyond the buzzword so 2:53 you can combat it. 2:58 Similar to some of you, I'm new to tech. 3:01 My background is in education. 3:04 While I did similar roles in creating and facilitating trainings, 3:06 the playing field is a bit different with the switch to tech. 3:09 This has caused me moments of panic, feeling as if 3:13 everyone at Treehouse was gonna find out I'm not supposed to be here. 3:16 I felt like I was the only who experienced that and 3:20 tried to get over it, which didn't help. 3:23 Luckily, I found these tips that really have helped me deal with imposter 3:26 syndrome. 3:30 I'll share them in the next video. 3:31
