Add the following properties to hibernate.cfg.xml: 

connection.driver_class => org.hsqldb.jdbcDriver
connection.url => jdbc:hsqldb:file:./data/treehouse
dialect => org.hibernate.dialect.HSQLDialect

The connection.driver_class property element is missing or doesn't have the correct value.
