Adding icons to tabs in Android M - with Toolbar and Tabs (implementing-designs-for-android/customizing-the-action-bar)

This isn't so much of a question as it is an answer.

I ran into numerous difficulties adding icons, as it does not work the same way anymore. So, here's a GitHub link to the solution I got working.
