When you need to populate content on your webpage from a separate server to the one hosting your own files, using HTTP.

Any time a web application needs data to work that is accessed through an HTTP connection (non-locally) there is a need to process the code asynchronously, to avoid an unreliable (slow or failed) internet connection blocking the program from working.
