angle brackets

why do we use <> to specify the type that is going to be returned ? normally we specify data type by placing it without angle brackets before the name of the variable are these angle brackets only used when working with parse ?

There were two copies of your question posted in the forum. This happens when you double click on the post button. I did the same thing by clicking submit twice when it was taking way too long to show it posted in the first place and had to delete one of my comments.

I checked to make sure the deleted post was identical to this post and there were no comments or answers prior to deleting.
