Can somebody explain Inline and block elements?

I want to understand them. I heard in the lessons about them, but they introduced Inline-Block elements and they didn't quite explain that. What does an Inline-Block element do? Does it do both tasks?

Hi Otto.

Further to Robert's post.... Block elements take up the entire width of its parent element, however inline elements only take up as much width as their content.
