Can we edit this github app and make a new app?

Hello everyone I am keen on developing an app for tree conservation in India. I found this app on github :https://github.com/opentreemap/otm-core/wiki which is very similar to my idea. Can I modify it ( add some new features) and make a new app from it? If yes what all skills do I need to know or learn?

Hi there,

You should check the wording on the licence but it looks, at first glance, to be GNU which means you can copy the code and modify it but must make your code free to access also. As I started with, I suggest you read the licence agreement to see exactly what you're allowed to do with the code and what they expect from you.

Maybe drop the owners a note to ask.
