Can't drag items from the palette to the design view in Android Studio

I think I had the same issue. If you're using the latest version of Android 23. Then there are two xml files, one named content_main.xml and the other called activity_main.xml. Although in this tutorial there is only one. So whatever you wanna do you have to do it in the content_main.xml, this will be what the user will see eventually.
