did you forget a semi colon maybe? I tried using your code and passed just fine:

- (IBAction)signup:(id)sender {

self.username = self.usernameField.text;
self.password = self.passwordField.text;
PFUser *newUser = [PFUser user];
user.username = self.username;
user.password = self.password;

[newUser signUpInBackgroundWithBlock:^(BOOL succeeded, NSError *error) {}];
