child themes

I was actually able to create a child theme for a premium theme I had bought from themeforest. What happens is that after following all the steps according to the video, I end up having a defective child theme. The menu is not responding, plus I get a different link in a different spot of the screen, even though there is one already there. I wonder if it is somethiing about the original files or maybe I am writing the wrong information at the moment of creating the child theme.
