ahh in xcode 6.1.1 you need to select modal under "non-adaptive selection segue" instead of "non-adaptive accessory action"

if you created a segue in your storyboard by dragging from the tableViewCell, you dont need to implement didSelectRowAtIndexPath. the segue was created in the storyboard and is triggerred when you click on the cell. prepareForSegue is called before the segue fires.
