i am not sure how to set the h1 now as i am getting a bummer after everything which i think is well

You have a lot of extra tags in your code. You need one header element with one span and one h1 inside of it. You need to add your classes to the existing header and h1, rather than adding new empty tags.

You're adding unneeded tags. Its not asking you to add the <header> tags its asking to create a class selector within the <header> tag which looks like:

<header class="main-header">
</header>

Then you have to create a selector within the css to communicate with the html:

.main-header {
 background-color: orange;
}
