how to create a new repository

Dwayne, just run git init in the directory and you have it locally. I'd suggest you do git config user.name "Dwayne Munro" and git config user.email "your_email" before doing initial and subsequent commits. If you decide later that you want to publish it externally, it'll save you the hassle of fixing it later.
