Create an NSDictionary called 'artDict', with the following key/value pairs: "Artist":"Dali", "Title":"The Ship", "Medium":"Oil Paint". Be sure to use the literal syntax.

not sure whats wrong with the syntax, but i keep getting syntax errors. i followed my notes exactly so i must have missed something..

variable_assignment.mm 
NSDictionary *artDict = @ {
                           @"Artist": @ "Dali",
                           @"Title": @ "The Ship",
                           @"Medium": @ "Oil Paint",
};

Hi J V,

The compiler is picky in regard to the syntax that is required, the problem is the space between the @ symbol and the opening { curly brace. Simply removing that space will solve the syntax error.

found that out right after i posted the question of course...thanks though

any clue why this won't work when I'm asked to " Create an NSString variable called 'favoriteArtist' and assign it the value found for the key 'Artist', in the 'artDict'."

NSString *favoriteArtist; favoriteArtist = [[artDict valueForKey:@"Artist"]];

You're very close, you don't need to declare favoriteArtist and assign it on separate lines but that's just me nitpicking :smile:. The problem is you have double square brackets, you only need to use one set when retrieving values using the valueForKey method.

NSString *favoriteArtist = [artDict valueForKey:@"Artist"];
