create fragment

I want to create fragment and initiated fragment manager, beginTransaction, and add to parent view, then commit, but the platform said there is something wrong in the code. Here I am writing code as I submitted: FragmentManager fm = new FragmentManager(); fm.beginTransaction().add(R.id.parent, new NewsFragment()).commit();

NewsFragment.java
public class NewsFragment extends Fragment {
    @Override
    public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup container, Bundle savedInstanceState) {
       return inflater.inflate(R.layout.fragment_news,container,false);

    }
}
MainActivity.java
public class MainActivity extends AppCompatActivity {
    @Override
    public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
        super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
        setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);

        FragmentManager fg = new FragmentManager();
        FragmentTransaction ft = fg.beginTransaction();
        NewsFragment fragment = new NewsFragment();
        ft.add(R.id.placeholder, fragment);
       ft.commit();
    }
}
