Creating a contact form using php

I want to create a simple contact form where clients can contact me via my website. I know I can do this with php...but I don't know php yet. I've found a downloadable template, but I still want to understand what's going on. Do I need to follow the whole php track...or can someone recommend which of the lessons directly relate to creating forms? Thanks
