creating website mockups guide

Hi!

I think I know enough to start building websites on my own, but a huge problem i've been having is that I feel like I don't really know how to decently plan the layout for a website. I've gone through a lot of the web design tutorials here, but still feel like I have a really good grasp of general rules of thumb when planning a website layout. Was wondering if anyone could direct me and any other resources for this...

There isn't really a "standard" way to go about this process. I recommend maybe start with trying to build your own website and consider why you're building it. Is it for work? To show off your mock-ups? Is it a blog? What you're building can have a strong impact on what will be found on your website and for whom. I'm currently building my own portfolio website to give to potential employers that includes my experience here on Treehouse and I'm creating a new webpage for other businesses in my community whose websites I find lacking. Each of these websites are going to be built differently. You're clearly not going to build a website the same way for a Real-Estate agent as you would for a pizza place. If you haven't yet, I recommend you try the UX Basics course, it allows you to better understand why you're building a website. If you have a website in mind, look at other websites that are similar or that other businesses have already established. If you're building a website for a pizza place for example, look at other websites that those vendors have.

You shouldn't limit yourself to much. Look at websites you like and ones with intuitive UIs. As for rapidly setting up a layout look into wireframes. There are a lot of tools for this out there that can easily be found with google.
