data-icon vs Id

why do we use data-icon over Id's and why we use thier value with some strange characters. Where can i find out more about this 'data'-icon i cannot find anywhere about them. plz provide a useful link.

You really should not be using id's for CSS as it may affect re-usability and could prevent your CSS from being DRY.

Using data-icon is one method for using icon fonts that is easily recognizable if you are reading through HTML by using the HTML5 data- attribute. It is also easily accessible to use in CSS.
