Difference between EvaluationContextExtension (sec) and th:if="#{authorization.expression('hasRole(''ROLE_USER'')')}

I noticed that in this weather app's SecurityConfig class there is an EvaluationContextExpression. Could you please explain the benefits of this over using th:if="#{authorization.expression('hasRole(''ROLE_USER'')')}? Thank you.
