DNS Servers

Dream Host gave 3 name servers, why do we need three? Is it purely for redundancy? So Name Cheap connects to 1 to pull data and if it is down, then it will connect to another?

Hi Thania,

Yes, multiple nameservers are for redundancy purposes.

If there is only one single DNS server and it goes down, all the services go down. With multiple name servers one can fail and the others will take over and be reachable.

Thank you :)

One more thing, the IP number that the domain name points to, so those numbers, do they change depending on the server that is serving up the files? For if the domain name server maps to NS1 would it be a different IP number to NS2?

Maybe think of the name server as a telephone book. The different name servers will have different ips, so they are indepently reachable. But the ip-adress they point to can be the same but doesnt have to be. Hope this helps.

That works, thank you :)

Question to video-sequence 04:48 Why do you create a new username - there already is one. Is this particular in this case as an example or do I really need to do this? Thanks for an answer!
