Do I add the item in the list to the first .remove() function? Or do I start a new one. Please Help

Do I start a new .remove() function, or keep the same one and add the item?

lists.py 
states = [
    'ACTIVE',
    ['red', 'green', 'blue'],
    'CANCELLED',
    'FINISHED',
    5,
]
states.remove(5)
states.remove(['green'])
