do i need to be good at design to be a successful web developer?

do i need to be good at design to be a successful front-end web developer? I'm really not good at making my own design. I can't even match colors well that look good overall.

I'd say no. Many larger organizations will have designers and actually provide you with all of the images and graphics you're required to use. Think of IBM, for example--they're going to give you the logo to use and you have no say in what it looks like, the size, color, etc. When you work for a small company or as a freelancer you will often be providing these things yourself --but again, it's no worry --you can always purchase these things and graphic designers are very cheap --think of all the art students out of work.

I agree with much of what Burton King says, and I'll add that it doesn't hurt to be aware of design principles, and how a designer approaches a problem. It can make meetings between yourself and designers go more smoothly.

If you have that insight, your knowledge as a developer, plus an idea of how to improve a design (whether in terms of functionality or aesthetics) it'll make the whole process more involving and rewarding.

You don't need to be good at design to be a front end developer. I actually have met a few of the front end developers for reddit and one of them will outright admit he is terrible at design.
