exception handling

this code is not working can anyone please help?

try:
    def add(a,b):
        a=float(a)
        b=float(b)
except ValueError:
    return None
else:
    return a+b

The try: except: else: blocks should be inside the function like this;

def add(a,b):    
    try:
         a=float(a)
         b=float(b)
    except ValueError:
         return None
    else:
         return a+b
