featured image chexckbox not showing

when I go to the portfolio Custom Posts page and add a new porfolio post and look for the featured image checkbox on the screen options there is nothing showing. I put the add_theme_support( 'post-thumbnails' ); in the function file, in the regular posts the featured image option is showing, so I know it's working. I tried unchecking and checking all the different "hide on screen" options from the custom field pluggin, but still nothing.

So since I can't select any featured images my portfolio page is empty.

Any ideas?
