Featured image slide show question

So you can basically use the bootstrap slide anywhere on the page with some Wordpress functions and what not. But all the functions grabs the "Featured Image" of the post or page. But to do this do you always need to grab a featured image?. I assume you can just use the custom post types plugin and make like 3 custom posts set 3 featured image and set those for the slide. But im just curious as to if this is the only way you can grab images dynamically?
