General Discussion

Forum is now Community

Hi Everyone,

We just wanted to let you know that we’ve made a few changes to the community forums that we wanted to let you know about. For starters, the forums and leaderboards are now grouped under “Community”, which you’ll now notice in the main navigation. We’ve also moved the forum filters from the sidebar to the search control bar, which many of you will be familiar with from the Library. You will now also find the most important actions grouped in the top-right corner of each page in the forum (i.e. “Ask Question, “Follow Discussion”, etc).

We hope you'll find everything is less cluttered and much easier to use. This is the first step of a plan to provide you better tools for talking with your fellow students, getting your questions answered, and making it easier to make connections with like-minded folks going through the same journey you are.

Also, we have tested these changes thoroughly, there may still be a few bugs that need to be caught. Please post any issues you might stumble across here in this discussion or via our support page as well.

As always, thanks for being a student!

Just noticed this.

One second the old Forum and then I refreshed and BOOM! Community is here.

Nice change. Will report bugs if I notice something. But thats like looking for a needle in a haystack! :)

Keep up the good work!

Tnx,

nWEBd

Great, thanks Nejc Vukovic!

Got a rather big surprise when I refreshed the forum page! Everything looks great and works perfectly so far. If I find any bugs I will make sure to let you guys know about them.

New Community looks great, one problem I found:

When I looked at the "Questions" section of a video, I right clicked to open in new tab. It takes me to the community landing page instead of the question. It shows the URL in the address bar for a second or two, which still shows as teamtreehouse.com/forum/"question title" and redirects to community landing page.

EDIT: I was able to navigate to the question but typing the URL. Since the address bar shows the old URL for a second or two (teamtreehouse.com/forum/whats-wrong-with-my-code-39), I just changed forum to community and it took me to the question. Although clicking on the link from the video page still redirects you to the community landing page.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention!

No problem Aimee Ault !

Loving the new change! After all, this place seems a lot more like a Community than it does a Forums section - everyone here is super helpful and appreciative :)

One note is that for me, things look a lot more squashed now:

Also, would it be possible to get /forum links to still work but just redirect to /community so that old links still work? That would be great if you could!

Anyhow, loving the new design changes! Things look a lot more minimal and simplistic ;)

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Here's a few notes on the items everyone has commented on:

  1. Old Forum Links — We're aware of the issue here and Aimee Ault is currently working on a fix for this. We should have that out shortly. Thanks for your patience on that.
  2. Content Width — How to best utilize the full-width of the screen is a constant topic for our team. For starters the vast majority of our students are using laptop-sized screens, so we've optimized much of the design to accommodate for this. One other consideration is that it is common to see a max-width being set on larger blocks of content to improve the readability. For instance, if a paragraph is too wide, then it becomes harder for the eyes to naturally pick up on the next line. With all this being said, we'll certainly continue to optimize the design for as many different screen sizes as possible — big or small :)

Hope that all helps! Thanks again!

I actually liked having the language filters on the right side on larger screens. I often filter for PHP as that is my favorite language and I try to make sure every PHP question is answered in some way, even if it is an I don't know.

I go on vacation backpacking and come back and there's now Community! Woo!

This is going to be awesome.

:zap:

The navigation on the listing of posts still calls this space "forum"

Ted Sumner Yep, you're right. That part was planned. It's mainly just the main navigation bar on the left-hand side of the page that we're now referring to as "Community".

That is confusing. You announced that the forum is now the community. Now the forum is part of the community. The community consists of the forum and the leaderboard is a more accurate description of the new organization.
