GraphQL vs REST API

Hiya community! I've stumbled across this new and cool stack called GraphQL. I've been reading blogs and loads of information about how GraphQL might replace REST API in future. I just wanna know What gives GraphQL that kinda edge over REST Api? I mean if someone can gimme some insight about GraphQL and its cons and when not to use GraphQL, that'd be cool. Thank you!
