In my experience, I've found that when picking a project to work on, it should be something you're passionate about because by working on something you're passionate about, it makes it easier to stay driven and motivated. To extend on this, I find it helpful to think of problems that need to be solved and then look over the list of problems I've written to see which one excites me most.
