Help building an address book

I want to try and build a simple address book with PHP/MySQL. I want it sorted alphabetically and with a heading above each block of names containing the letter in the alphabet.

If I just do an ORDER BY on the SELECT I won't be able to put in 26 headings, one for each letter. Do I have to create 26 queries, one for each letter? And 26 while loops?

Does anyone know of a smart way I can achieve this?
