11,956 PointsHowdy - While I don't think anyone would tell you its required, I think its very helpful to have that understanding & availability for any part of these lessons. Personally I use a domain name I have had for two years and even though I have not done much with it since, I now use it to practice & try out certain aspects =)

I think with all Treehouse videos and lessons, they are tutorials you can choose to follow along with or not.
That being said, I highly recommend investing in the domain and hosting so you can follow along! I'm also doing the Wordpress track (and having completed a bunch of other lessons around HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and design) and I can tell you, having your own website to post your work live and walk through the tutorial exactly as they teach is really important to having it stick in your memory. It's one thing to watch someone do something, and it's another to try it yourself!
