Hooks to the HTML

Sorry, but what the expression "adding hooks to the HTML file" means? I got a bit confused when Gil mentioned this expression.

As used here, a "hook" is a change made to a piece of software to allow it's functionality to be extended by other software.

The point being made here is that the new styles are being added without adding any hooks (making any changes) to the HTML code.
