How did he add the phone icon?

He added the phone icon by adding the text, "\2706." How is this possible? Do browsers just recognize this text and add a phone icon wherever it sees it?

Its the unicode character for that glyph. UTF 8 is the char set and it can represent every unicode character. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Unicode_characters#Dingbats
