2,161 PointsThe attr() method takes a second parameter that is the value of the attribute that you are targeting.
$('.external').attr('target', '_blank');

16,343 PointsI agree; I've been following Front End Web Development track, and have been learning perfectly until the jQuery course with Andrew Chalkley. His teaching style is very confusing and the test questions and coding challenges aren't intuitive. He jumps around, says not to worry about something, etc.
I hope Team Treehouse reviews this and makes improvements.
