how old is this video? my photoshop is very different and i'm having a very difficult time following along.

I'm new to photoshop and I'm spending so much time trying to figure out where everything is. the help menu isn't that helpful. Maybe the tools I can't find are called something else in the version I'm using? (CC photoshop)

Depending on your settings, you might have your paintbucket un-selected, and instead your gradient or 3d material drop tool. Just click and hold down on the icon, which should have a hotkey of G on your side toolbar. Then scroll down and select the paintbucket.
