How to Get the Box around the object at 4:54

This particular tutorial is not so good. While the others are done quite skillfully, he does not explain and misstates "direct selection vs selection in several instances" This is really hard for someone trying to learn.

AT 4:54 he says to "simply switch to the selection tool to resize" at that point a box shows up outside of the object on his screen. I have wasted about 4 hours going through the tutorial until this point to make sure I had no missed anything. This box is no appearing an I cannot drag to resize the object. Rather, the whole object just moves-- any suggestions? Any help would be amazing. I just want to move on, but I can't

Did you use the normal selection tools (it is a black arrow pointer). If you click on the object the box will appear, than you can resize it.

I did notice this is not outlined in this video. This is the direct selection tool, next to the selection tool. The direct selection tool will allow you to select specific points rather than the entire object.
