How to show different background by CSS?

So I have two related questions

1) If just HTML webpage (no JS, HTML+CSS only) how can you show different backgrounds depending on verticle screen (height longer) or horizontal (width longer) screen?

2) How to achieve the above request in HTML emails?

I'm not sure about emails, but to show different properties depending on width and height or even orientation, you can use CSS media queries
