How would you create animations similar to MailChimp's svg animations?

I'm a big fan of MailChimp's svg animations. (here's a couple in gif format, but the originals are svg) alt text alt text

How would you suggest creating similar animations? Is it basically just using CSS animations to to move the elements? Are people using programs like Adobe Edge to create these more easily? The curved hand slap animation has me perplexed, since the arm is not a static svg element. Any other suggestions?

Halfway through the folllowing mailchimp newsletter there is a post titled "Preparing SVGs for Animation" that talks about the process of creating these: http://us5.campaign-archive1.com/?awesome=no&u=7e093c5cf4&id=0f5ee3a173

Hope this is helpful!

Wow, thank you so much. That's fantastic that MailChimp makes all that information publicly available.
