It seems to me that the way to avoid bias is to do research and not guess at the user's pain points.

At this stage, we haven’t performed any research ourselves so we will be making assumptions. Assumptions are great for quickly getting started but always need to be validated later on. This is the quickest way to get started as user testing and/or interviews can be a lengthy process to complete. Assumptions also have a better chance of being effective if you have a base understanding of the user, as Devin mentioned in the video. Assumptions can also be formed using data or feedback provided for similar or competitor solutions. (customer review sites, marketplaces reviews, etc.)
Again, with that said assumptions are the best way to get started quickly but should be validated with real users as soon as possible, and we do go over researching methods such as user interviews and user testing in other courses as well.
