Slack is a company/service separate from Treehouse that Treehouse uses to give their team and techdegree students a place to communicate. Thus, a Slack account is entirely independent from your Treehouse account. When you're signing into the techdegree Slack, you're not signing into your Treehouse account but creating an entirely new Slack account, so you need to either set up an account with the link you got in your email or sign into the Slack workspace with an account you already created for that workspace. All in all, your Treehouse and Slack accounts are entirely disparate
