i m trying but i do not know the pattern for empty string

You're on the right track. In the video prior to the challenge, he explains a bit more on the empty string formats.

from django.conf.urls import url
from . import views

urlpatterns = [
    url(r'^$', views.index)
]

The r'^$' represents an open string format.
