I don't get the question

I was doing the jquery basic and one of the practice question, I didn't understand what exactly they wants to do? The question is like this:

Using jQuery only, add to all links with the class "external", the target attribute with the value of "_blank".

What I understand is select all <li> with class external and- attribute ????

js/app.js
var target = $('.external li').attr('href');
index.html
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
  <link rel="stylesheet" href="css/style.css" type="text/css" media="screen" title="no title" charset="utf-8">
  <title>Links Page</title>
</head>
<body>
  <h1>Links</h1>
  <ul>
    <li><a href="http://google.com" class="external">Google</a></li>
    <li><a href="http://yahoo.com" class="external">Yahoo</a></li>
  </ul>
  <script src="//code.jquery.com/jquery-1.11.0.min.js" type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8"></script>
  <script src="js/app.js" type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8"></script>
</body>
</html>

<a href="http://www.teamtreehouse.com" target="_blank">Open Treehouse in a new window</a>

So you'd want to use this:

$("a.external").attr('target' ,'_blank');

Javid, I think, $("a.external") without space is because, we want to select all anchor tags with class "external". Let's see what Neil reply. If u find answer let me know.
