I don't understand what all the dollar signs and numbers are in jshell

I am learning how to code java objects and in the course Craig uses jshell but I am not sure that I am grasping the concept of jshell and how it works.

As I understood, JShell Automatically creates variables that you can use.

When you type Integer.parseInt("30"); and JShell outputs: $7 ==> 30

It means JShell created a variable "30" which you can call in your code with just "$7"
