In this case, something else.

Remember, the challenge says to highight the "element immediately preceding that button". So to select it starting with the button, you want something other than "next". Remember there are element properties that refer to nearby elements.

I'm guessing with a little research into element properties you can get it without an explicit spoiler.

The challenge asks to edit the class of the preceding element of the button selected - you can do this with .previousElementSibling:

const list = document.getElementsByTagName('ul')[0];

list.addEventListener('click', function(e) {
  if (e.target.tagName == 'BUTTON') {
    e.target.previousElementSibling.className="highlight";
  }
});
